The climatic state of the north eastern part of Nigeria is with the end goal that it is difficult for yearly and different plants to deliver because of restricting variables as water (Oxford Business Group, 2010). The northern locale, explicitly the upper east bone-dry region of northern Nigeria as per Bermingham (2000) is consumed by a low yearly precipitation decided in just three months. The normal yearly precipitation in the northern Nigeria ranges from 500-750 millimeters and it generally not the equivalent; is incredibly erratic, because of the way that the majority of it falls as serious, frequently with, outrageous inconstancy, storms (Mathews 2002), In other, the vegetation is scanty and the grasses are short. Unequivocally, as per the SLGP consultant’s reportâ carried out by Fullbrook et al in the year 2005, they made the accentuations that Kano State of the northern Nigeria don’t have a strategy for water and hence there are requirements for improving the supportable arrangements of water .Furthermore, they asserted that the water flexibly condition in Kano State is poor and has been weakening for a long time in both the urban and country regions because of expedient in the populace development and ineffectual perspectives to water gracefully arrangement, joined with lacking subsidizing. Insufficient gracefully has huge impacts for the wellbeing of the occupants. Water is apparently free in provincial zones yet individuals in urban zones are charged for it. Likewise in light of the fact that the methodology of the administration towards water gracefully has consistently been top down with no contribution to arranging choices from residents. Water flexibly has truly been se en by an enormous piece of the populace and by numerous government officials as a social help (Fullbrook, et al 2005) 1.3 The Water Situation of the district The number of inhabitants in the states in the northern locale of Nigeria are developing quickly. As indicated by Fullbrook et al (2005), absolutely in the Kano express, the populace and the water gracefully insights state one of the northern conditions of Nigeria. As of the estimations introduced in the table, 44% of the populace approaches consumable water. Therefor the table as indicated by them determines thatâ â in the request for 4.8 million to 6.7 million individuals in Kano State are don’t have enough water flexibly as appeared on the table underneath: Table 1: Population and Water Supply Statistics S/No. Items Low Value High Value 1 Evaluated all out state populace 8,600,000 12,000,000 2 Populace outside of Greater Kano (75%) 6,450,000 9,000,000 3 More noteworthy Kano region populace (1-2) 2,150,000 3,000,000 4 Semi-urban populace (30% of 2) 1,935,000 2,700,000 5 Country Population (2-4) 4,515,000 6,300,000 6 Populace served Greater Kano (half) 1,075,000 1,500,000 7 Populace not served Greater Kano zone 1,075,000 1,500,000 8 Populace served semi-urban (half) 967,500 1,350,000 9 Populace not served semi-urban 967,500 1,350,000 10 Populace served country (39%) 1,760,000 2,457,000 11 Populace not served country 2,754,000 3,843,000 12 All out populace serve 3,803,000(44%) 5,307,000(44% 13 All out populace not served 4,797,000 6,693,000 2.0 PRESENTATION OF OPTIONS. 2.1 Introduction of choices. The unmistakable jobs of the strategies for the arrangement subsequently managing the issue of absence of water in the northern piece of Nigeria are scheduled underneath; such are: Ground water. Imported water and Water Harvesting. 3.0 REQUIREMENTS The potential techniques for water arrangement to the bone-dry locale of northern Nigeria were contrasted concurring with the accompanying criterias; Cost Convenience Water quality Amount of water delivered. 4.0 COMPARISON OF THE POSSIBLE METHODS OF WATER PROVISIONS. 4.1 Groundwater One of the potential techniques for water arrangement to the semi-bone-dry locale of the northern Nigeria is the groundwater. As indicated by Mather (2004) He called attention to that the groundwater techniques is overwhelmingly a decent and uncertain decision for reasonable water arrangements in the northern Nigeria. Besides, Adelana and Macdonald in 2008 and Alley in 1993, they made the critical guaranteed that the accomplishment of a viable flexibly, arranging is need which required the hydrological and hydrogeological information on the water request and the other financial conditions, for example, the expense of penetrating pageantry and different materials-the advancement of under gathering water required a few procedures the quality will be influenced if not tail in a steady progression. 4.2 Imported Water. Besides, the imported water ought to be one of the conceivable of strategy for water arrangement. As indicated by Gratzfeld and et al in 2003, they expressed that the utilization of boreholes siphons with hand siphons, channels, pipeline, and big haulers has expanded the open door for country regions that need water flexibly. What's more, this effectsly affects such exercises like, agrarian exercises like water system has been a significant methods for these strategies. A conspicuous end from crafted by   Arlosoroff (1984) is that truly, the hand siphon support has been overseen from multiple points of view, however with little prohibition, some drive has been made for the most part just to fix the siphon once it has harmed down as opposed to do a booked preventive upkeep. Siphon dependability (accessibility) relies upon both the recurrence of breakdowns and the time span for which the siphon is unavailable each time it needs consideration. 4.3 Rainwater collecting Downpour water is the seizure of precipitation for human utilize near where it drops before it goes down into the ground (Thomas and Ford, 2000). Residential Rainwater gathering (DRWH), a sub-set of water collecting is generally show as rooftop run-off reaping in light of the fact that ground flood is unreasonably grimy for safe human drinking (Thomas, 2000) and Audu (1999) the downpour water reaping is normally inspired by its surface supplies, along these lines for a situation where pipeline water arrangements and ground water are not accessible there is inclination for every single home in the network to rehearses the water reaping technique. Anyway as indicated by Marson (2006) in Kaplan (2011) the water can be dangerous because of some poison, for example, dust, feathered creature dropping and some barometrical constituents. Therefor this strategy is modest, simple however not excessively great. 5.0 CONCLUSIONS Taking everything into account, water has been perhaps the most issue of the northern Nigeria; anyway there are three potential techniques for providing water to the semi-parched district of northern Nigeria referenced and investigated in this report and these strategies are analyzed as far as such issues as cost, usability, quality and amount of the water. 6.0 LIMITATION Due to the impediment regarding the word tally this report couldn't communicate noticeably the detail clarification of the prerequisites and the correlation of choices.  7.0 RECOMMENDATIONS Considering  all the necessities in giving water to the dry locale, it could be seen that the most dependable and moderate techniques is the downpour water collecting, reason being that in the northern Nigeria there are huge populace with minimal effort of living and their significant occupation is agribusiness. In the dry season, larger part of the plants and creatures pass on, most likely because of absence of water. Sotherefor, water gathering ought to be the best alternatives during the blustery season. Anyway the downpour water can be debased and effectively sullied because of the impacts of ecological perils. At last, for a decent nature of water, government, and different bodies ought to mediate in the imported water strategy since the individuals don’t have enough account. Dracula by Bram Stoker Modern Man to Enduring Romance

In Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Dracula is representative of the superhuman ideal that man is striving to achieve. Dracula is a strong willed, powerful, brilliant masculine figure, and through these characteristics, he appeals to the contemporary reader. By the late 20th and early 21st century, vampires have been transformed into creatures that offer endless happiness and immortality on earth. Such a transformation can be seen in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1992 production of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Instead of viewing the Faustian dream of endless self-gratification and fulfillment as potentially evil, popular culture depicts these satanic creatures as morally justified, and actually good. Stoker’s Dracula is aristocratic, well mannered, and highly†¦show more content†¦For Steward, Arthur, and Quincey, Mina allows them to unburden themselves, with regards to Lucy, upon her. Their gratefulness for Mina turns into genuine love for Mina, with her â€Å"man†™s brain †¦ and woman’s heart† (207). Mina also shows kindness to Steward’s patient Renfield, who transforms from a â€Å"pet lunatic† to a man with â€Å"courtesy and respect† (206). In turn, for her kindness, Renfield attempts to save Mina from Dracula, sacrificing himself. The men’s unconditional love for Mina heightens when Dracula forces Mina to drink his blood, like a â€Å"child forcing a kitten’s nose into a saucer of milk to compel it to drink† (247). The men truly love Mina, and attempt to protect her, sacrificing themselves selflessly. Coppola’s adaptation of Stoker’s Dracula presents an unconditional love between Mina and Dracula. Mina is the reincarnation of Elizabeta, suggesting a second chance for Dracula. Dracula, during the scene where he is feeding on Lucy, prevents Mina from seeing him as a monster. In a sense, it is romantic that Dracula does not want her to be frightened by him, but he r emains an animal-like monster. Later, when Dracula forces Mina to see him, he is simply a foreign, handsome man who first insults Mina then intrigues her. Unlike Stoker’s, where he refrains from being a Count, he admits to Mina that he is a prince. Growing Into Reality free essay sample

And it all comes down to this, a kid looks back at the empty shelves of toys that once where his world of fantasies, and they are now just traces that enhance the beauty of growing up and knowing that new responsibilities are about to come. Eight years ago, there was a kid full of dreams, desires and adventures that now seemed vanished. The news of moving to the unknown, leaving everything behind, felt as if the world was about to end. He would have never imagined however, that the news that once seemed as turning the world upside down, were the most rewarding ones of his life. At that moment, the only worry imaginable was to embark on a new adventure of medieval times and castles, dragons and knights, and conquer the fears and insecurities of going on stage solo. The expectations of life did not surpass the dreams that his parents or society had for him, like studying a career that even though it would have been easier, it would not have fulfilled his desires. We will write a custom essay sample on Growing Into Reality or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page His life was a movie that had already been written, with no possibilities of excitement or adventure. That shelf of toys was his only way out of this life, the only time he was able to travel into his dreams and be part of something he would never be; something that until eight years ago he thought to be impossible. His adventures came crumbling down when the words â€Å"We are moving out of the country† shattered his world. Seven words that took away any hope or dream left, seven words that tossed away the toys from the shelves into a bottomless pit, seven words that took away his breath. Adventures turned into responsibilities, turning this kid into me: someone capable of conquering games but now faced with real challenges. Until today I can feel the cold of my tears coming down as I said goodbye to my grandma, a cold that was quickly warmed by the surprisingly new adventure I was going to live. Today, standing in front of the empty shelf of toys took me back eight years. Little by little, the shelf was not full of toys anymore, but full of dreams; full of new adventures I never thought possible, that had me as the hero. The shelf of toys that once was my escape became my vault full of challenges and missions I was now able to defeat. As I moved to a new country, a new school, to a new life, I felt as the Jay Gatsby of my own novel. As someone living his own dreams that once were thought as impossible. Today, after eight years, standing in front of what once was my world of fantasies, I understood one thing. Life is an adventure, an adventure that we build as we pursue our dreams no matter where we are or where we go. My new home taught me that there are no frontiers if you dream, that there are no limitations as a shelf of toys, you are your own hero.

So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film Essay Example

So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film Essay This analytical folio is based on the health issue developing life skills, more to the point, perseverance. I chose the movie Seabiscuit to analyse as it is a movie based on perseverance, and this is portrayed by all the characters. I believe perseverance is an important part of everyday life, for everybody, in every task. If we didnt persevere, many tasks would remain uncompleted. The movie, based on the book by Laura Hillenbrand, is a true story, and was released in 2003. There were four producers for this particular movie, Kathleen Kennedy; Frank Marshall; Gary Ross and; Jane Sindell. Gary Ross was also the director. So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film. Seabiscuit is set in the early 90s during the Depression. In my opinion the central theme of this film is that there have been people from past times who have been brave and courageous enough to accept that their social standings are as underdogs, and have fought to overcome all odds to achieve their goals. We will write a custom essay sample on So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on So I can make it clear why Seabiscuit is about perseverance I wrote a short review of the film specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer The story of Seabiscuit is the tale of four unlikely heroes, Charles Howard (Jeff Bridges), is a wealthy salesman, who suffers both personal and financial losses during the depression. In the shape of his sons tragic death, his divorce and his business going under, he regains hope through a horse and his jockey. Tom Smith (Chris Cooper), is a disciplined, ageing trainer, Johnny Red Pollard (Tobey Maguire), is a quick tempered jockey with various disabilities against him. These include being blind in his right eye, searching for where he belongs as he was given up by his parents as a young child, and later in the movie, coping a shattered leg. The last but not least of these four is Seabiscuit, an undersized horse, who has been mistreated all his life, and also suffers a leg injury during the film. It is the depression and no one escapes the harshness of the times. It is during these bleak days that horse racing quickly gathers momentum, and it is under these circumstances that the four main characters stories entwine. Howard seeks a new business venture in horse racing and hires Pollard as his Jockey and Smith as his trainer. Smith happens along Seabiscuit, a broken horse and narrowly saves him from a bullet, then insists that Howard lets him train the ill tempered horse for racing. Seabiscuit soon becomes the underdog who could, and wins many races. But despite his popularity, Seabiscuit is seen as a cheap novelty by the elite of the East Coast Horse Racing, headed by Samuel Riddle, owner of the triple crown winner War Admiral. Howard gains public favour in order to force Riddle to put his money where his mouth is, and this rapidly grows into a media frenzy. Seabiscuit, the representative of the underdog hopes and dreams and War Admiral, the beneficiary of champion breeding and training, finally race in 1938 at a race course named Pimlico. Before this time, Pollard shatters his leg, and is unable to ride in this race; in fact he is told that he will never ride again. After the race, at Pimlico, Seabiscuit also injures his leg, and Howard is informed that he will never race again. Despite the odds stacked against them, Seabiscuit and Pollard refused to give up. Both Seabiscuit and Pollard slowly rehabilitate each other, and race together again, despite the protests that Howard and Smith voice. The last race in this movie is spectacular, and shows the greatest perseverance that could have been achieved by these characters. Just when it looked like Seabiscuit was beaten in the home stretch, he ducked in between the horses in front and came away with a victory. This film shows how these men and beast overcome incredible odds to achieve their goals. I think that if everybody showed the perseverance that the characters portray, life would be much simpler. They never let anything get them down, and I dare to say that more people than what you would have at any World Series or football grand final today would have attended, and possibly nobody left the track feeling disappointed, but instead full of hope. In our daily lives, we encounter many times when we persevere, even if we dont realise this. When things go wrong, we generally try to find a way to remedy the situation, this is perseverance. Going to work, school or an activity that we attend regularly, even if we dont enjoy it, this is commitment, which shows perseverance. Believing in your dreams, just as the characters in Seabiscuit did is perseverance. Perseverance is a commitment, a dedication to yourself and following through with your actions. Perseverance enables an individual to endeavour in spite of adversity. Perseverance is setting goals and sticking with them, making adjustments if needed, until completed. Just like in the movie, when Seabiscuit and Pollard were told they couldnt go on, they adjusted their goals and finished what they had set out to accomplish. Also the fact that Pollard and Seabiscuit were supporting each other is part of persevering as well. Without support or encouragement, I dont think persevering would be easy. Believing in ones self and your goals, achieving what you set out to do, having courage to achieve what you want to achieve and having encouragement along the way, all play a role in perseverance. The characters in this movie persevered through all kinds of problems by keeping focused on their goals. Everyday, whether it is getting out of bed for work, school or something else, completing tasks that you need to do / want to do, or even just cooking a meal. Having goals and completing the goals, as small as they may seem, is persevering. This movie shows characters persevering through all sorts of hard issues, but not all things we persevere at are hard. Every day, I get out of bed and have breakfast with my son, and then I will sit down with my son to watch a program with him. I then do some homework, maybe start some clothes washing or baking and then it is lunch time. Just in a few hours I have persevered four maybe five times without even knowing. Perseverance doesnt always need to be acknowledged, but if you look close enough at your own life you will probably see a fair amount of persevering. If you look in the mirror, the person you see staring back at you is probably a person who has persevered at some stage. On reflection of the issue of perseverance which is shown in this movie, I have gained the knowledge that in even the simplest task, anybody can persevere. I had never realised that just believing in ones self and your goals is perseverance. I took for granted the tasks which I completed everyday as just mundane tasks, but did not realise that by completing these tasks was persevering. I believe that this movie is based wholly on the health issue of perseverance, as all the characters portrayed persevered through the hard times. I would recommend this move to absolutely anybody as it made me realise, as I am sure others will find, that persevering is a part of everyday life. I believe that this movie was about the relationships people have with each other, and the situations we find ourselves in because of these relationships. I will take with me the knowledge that I am persevering everyday, whether or not I realise it, and that puts a smile on my face.

LAND GRABBING KEEPS ME AWAKE - Essay Example With global reports confirming the world’s peaking oil, among other greater risks such as persistent hunger partly contributed by anthropogenic climate change, the putative existence of ‘reserve agricultural land’ in the global south, particularly in Africa and the Latin America, has been labeled the lifeline, thus the dramatic revaluation and the subsequent haste to acquire and control large swathes of land for agro-industrial, large-scale resource extraction initiatives and food security (McMichael, 2012). Buoyed by the idea that long-term landholdings are the only avenue to assuage continuous supply of their needs, ‘finance-rich, resource-poor’ countries are aggressively funding the acquisitions in government to government deals that leaves the poor even more worse off than ever. While the surge in the transnational commercial land deals ringing in massive ‘private and non-private’ lands to the dispossession of the global poor are guid ed by the neoliberal policies under the supervision of WTO, the trade-offs seem far off a just order, for the rules only but favors the big Brother, thus the accelerated land grabbing, more so in Africa where unutilized land is considered plentiful and labor are relatively cheap. In spite of the title deeds issued by most African, Latin American and Asian countries indicating ownership, land remains the property of the state. Accordingly, the state possesses all the rights to do whatever it desires, including utilizing as a bait to attract foreign investments (Houtart 2010). Ironically disturbing is the very fact that Africa, a continent that faces hunger the most, takes the lion’s share of the dubious land deals that exacerbates their local food insecurity further, for arable lands leased in large scale to foreigners only produce food and other products for export purposes. Small scale farmers hitherto

In depth news assignment - Research Paper Example Since the fund will also be used for recapitalizing existing large private funds, it is therefore important that the private funds should channel such funds in activities which can generate export revenue for the country. Over the period of time, domestic pool of private funds has actually declined thus making it extremely difficult for the private and new ventures to have an access to such pool of funds. An increase in the pool of funds therefore would further result into availability of new funds which can further bolster the economy. The new trends are increasingly suggesting the rapid increase in the technology based ventures with strong probability to become international businesses. New start-ups have actually grown into large and profitable international businesses because of getting local funding support. It is also critical to allow provinces to make their own strategies too in order to ensure that they can take greater benefit of the new proposed plan. Some argue that the overall size of pool of the funds to be made available is relatively small and may not create the required stimulus for the private sector to actually develop the new businesses which can make their name at the international level. For expansion into the international markets and to capture the larger base of customers through forming international joint ventures and strategic alliances, Canadian firms will require lot more capital and resources to be successful at the international level. (The Canadian Press , 2013) It is also considered that the overall business environment in Canada is risk averse and private sector is actually not been able to achieve the kind of investment it must require in order to thrive at the international level. In order to effectively form good strategic alliances as well as the joint ventures, it is extremely important that private sector must also develop the ability to generate its equity funds. The concepts “community” Essay Example for Free

The concepts â€Å"community† Essay Assessment evidence shows that you can: †¢ critically discuss the meaning of the concepts â€Å"community† and â€Å"community development† †¢ discuss some of the difficulties encountered when explaining these concepts †¢ provide a historical background of community development †¢ critically discuss how the meaning of these concepts has changed over time and how scholars influenced by different ideologies and disciplines have given diverse meanings to these concepts †¢ use evidence from the prescribed readings Critically discuss the meaning of the concepts â€Å"community† and â€Å"community development† Community Geographers emphasise spatial aspects, economists emphasise work and markets and sociologists emphasise social interactions and networks in their definitions of community. Community is also defined as people in a given geographical location, the word can really refer to any group sharing something in common. This may refer to smaller geographic areas a neighborhood, a housing project or development, a rural area or to a number of other possible communities within a larger, geographically-defined community. Examples of community: The Catholic community (or faith community, a term used to refer to one or more congregations of a specific faith). The arts community The African American community The education community The business community The homeless community The gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered community The medical community The Haitian community The elderly community Often when we think of community, we think in geographic terms. Our community is the city, town or village where we live. When community is defined through physical location, it has precise boundaries that are readily understood and accepted by others. Defining communities in terms of geography, however, is only one way of looking at them. Communities can also be defined by common cultural heritage, language, and beliefs or shared interests. These are sometimes called communities of interest. Even when community does refer to a geographic location, it doesn’t always include everyone within the area. For example, many Aboriginal communities are part of a larger non-Aboriginal geography. In larger urban centres, communities are often defined in terms of particular neighbourhoods. Most of us belong to more than one community, whether we’re aware of it or not. For example, an individual can be part of a neighbourhood community, a religious community and a community of shared interests all at the same time. Relationships, whether with people or the land, define a community for each individual. Community development The United Nations defines Community development as a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. Community development is a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems. Community wellbeing (economic, social, environmental and cultural) often evolves from this type of collective action being taken at a grassroots level. Community development ranges from small initiatives within a small group to large initiatives that involve the broader community. It is a broad term given to the practices of civic leaders, activists, involved citizens and professionals to improve various  aspects of communities, typically aiming to build stronger and more resilient local communities. Community development seeks to empower individuals and groups of people by providing them with the skills they need to cause in their communities. These skills are often created through the formation of large social groups working for a common agenda. Community developers must understand both how to work with individuals and how to affect communities positions within the context of larger social institutions. Community development as a term has taken off widely in anglophone countries i.e. the USA, UK, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and other countries in the Commonwealth. It is also used in some countries in eastern Europe with active community development associations in Hungary and Romania. The Community Development Journal, published by Oxford University Press, since 1966 has aimed to be the major forum for research and dissemination of international community development theory and practice. Community development approaches are recognised internationally. These methods and approaches have been acknowledged as significant for local social, economic, cultural, environmental and political development by such organisations as the UN, WHO, OECD, World Bank, Council of Europe and EU. Discuss some of the difficulties encountered when explaining these concepts Mayo (in Mae Shaw 2008:24) observes that it is not just that the term has been used ambiguously; it has been contested, fought over and appropriated for different uses and interests to justify different politics, policies and practices. Stacey (in Mae Shaw 2008:24) also states that the ambiguity of the term community also tells us something about its wider social significance and the way in which it continues to be appropriated to legitimise or justify a wide range of political positions, which might otherwise be regarded as incompatible. Kumar (2005:279) takes the debate further by looking at how the concept community has often been used in the implementation of community-based natural resource management (hereafter CBNRM) projects. The manner in which the term community is represented conceptually, socially, politically and geographically in CBNRM policies shapes the way in which relation- ships and administrative procedures are constituted and enacted. Mearns and Scoones (in Kumar 2005:279) argue that the concept of community has been taken for granted, especially, in policies, projects and also the literature dealing with the CBNRM. They argue that a community has been portrayed as a distinct social group in one geographical location, sharing common characteristics, in harmony and consensus: images that actually may be quite misguiding reflections of reality. Uphoff (in Kumar 2005:280) argues that CBNRM faces two particular problems in how the community is conceptualised, firstly, communities are not necessarily bounded social or geographical units, and nor are they likely to be homogeneous entities with single and agreed interests. It is this generalisation of community that has made the implementation of CBNRM difficult. Provide a historical background of community development One author traces its history back to the mid-19th- century USA, while another finds its origin in the early 20th-century history of the USA. One says it all started in India in 1921, and yet another would credit the 1931 Gandhian experiment in rural reconstruction as its beginnings. It is also claimed that the British colonial administrators of India were the creators of the elusive concept of community development. Critically discuss how the meaning of these concepts has changed over time and how scholars influenced by different ideologies and disciplines have given diverse meanings to these concepts Conclusion About the early history of community development there is as little agreement simply because there is no definition. Essay --

When seeking yourself within a certain religion or faith people are trying to find the answer or the meaning of life, of their existence, what their purpose is and so on. Religion is the answer to things unexplainable, because how else could this have happened? Well, with every person there is a different mindset, a different way of thinking. Different people are drawn to different belief systems. Whether this is Buddhism, or the Branch of Dividians. Christianity or vampires, everyone is different and what they believe could be as right as the other because really, who knows? This is not a question of who’s right and who’s wrong, but why some belief systems more are accepted than others. When people say they belong to more popular religions like Christianity or Judaism others rarely bat an eye, but once you mention a religion that is known as a cult they think you are in danger or that you yourself are dangerous. Why is it that cults are less accepted by society, but having a religion is fully accepted and in some cases even encouraged? What makes them so different? According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary a religion is, â€Å"1. The belief in a god or a group of gods, 2. An organized system of beliefs, ceremonies and rules used to worship a god or groups of gods, or 3. An interest, belief or activity that is very important to a person or group.† Whereas the technical term for a cult is, â€Å"a group or sect bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc.† (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/cult). Although there is a difference in the technical definitions of religions and cults, the traits that define them are what makes them so similar. Defining a cult: A cult is typically defined by three common characteri... ...y need â€Å"something† for the sake of which to live gives a pretty good idea for why people join religions or even cults. What kind of people join cults? When people think about why and what types of people join cults, it is a common assumption that someone joining a cult must have physiological issues and that there is something â€Å"wrong† with them mentally. However, research shows that approximately two-thirds of cult members are psychologically healthy people that come from normal families with healthy relationships with one another. As for the remaining third, they are likely to have symptoms of depression. These symptoms are usually related to personal loss (like a death in the family), a failed romantic relationship, or troubles with their career. Only 5 to 6 percent of cult members demonstrate major psychological problems prior to joining a cult. (Rhoads, 2013)

History, strength of provisional government Essay

How far was the provisional government responsible for its own downfall? During the brief period of rule by The Provisional Government, Russia was troubled by several domestic issues that the provisional Government failed to sufficiently deal with when eventually led to their down fall in 1917. Their failure to fulfil the needs of the peasants, which was a big domestic issue, was a factor that led to their loss of support and in addition their failure to suppress the opposition led to their downfall. The instantaneous cause for their collapse was the fierce take over from the Bolsheviks led by Lenin. However the main factors that led to their downfall was their decision to continue in the war because it has worsened the issues that The Provisional Government failed to tackle which then led to loss of support from the bulk of the population and more importantly the army which they relied upon to defend The Provisional Government such as the July Days. In addition their decision to delay the elections gave the Bolsheviks a chance to take power. As a result, Lenin and the Bolsheviks were able to increase their support rapidly and take over so therefore The Provisional Government can be largely held responsible for their own downfall. Russia’s continuation in the war after the abdication of the tsar was the main reason for the down fall of The Provisional Government because it increased the issues that Russia faced already which worsened their respect and support as it was their decision to do so. As a result of this, they lost support of the army because they were losing in the war as they lost territory, soldiers and unprepared to go to battle. This decreased the soldier’s moral which eventually led to the breakdown of military discipline. This eventually led to radical parties having an increase of support because they were against the continuation of the war such as the Bolsheviks because they promised to end Russia’s involvement in the war. In addition, the continuation of the war meant that the issue of food shortages caused unrest amongst the population towards The Provisional Government. The Provisional Government also had little control over the countryside and also lacked the ability to impose their authority in its outside cities and towns. As a result the peasants took action which therefore undermined The  Provisional Governments authority. Many peasants took land from landowner’s whilst some engaged in violence. The Provisional Government was losing its authority in parts of Russia. The main reason for the lack of control was because The provisional Government lacked in legitimacy and due to this the public turned away and went to more radical parties such as the Bolsheviks. The peasants turned to the Bolsheviks because in the April Thesis, Lenin promised to address the land issue which The Provisional Government failed to do. And due to his, The Provisional Government support decreased and Bolsheviks support increased. The authority of The Provisional Government significantly weakened in June when they launched an attack on the Austro-Hungarian army. This was a utter failure and led to the breakdown of the Russian army. The soldiers leaving the front lines met and formed an Anti-Government rally in which they demanded all political power should be handed to the soviets. Furthermore other troops formed a Provisional Revolutionary Committee to campaign against the government. In addition only the government can be blamed for the events of the â€Å"July Days† because it was them who’s idea it was of the June offensive and therefore as a result, the July Days. By August 1917 Russia seemed on the verge of chaos because peasants were seizing land, industrial production was failing and soldiers were rebelling. Although the Provisional Government had survived, the demonstrations of the July Days brought a fatal blow to the position of The Provisional Government. Kornilov had feared a â€Å"coup d’à ©tat† and released imprisoned Bolsheviks and armed them to help the government. This was a blow as Bolsheviks membership increased and now they were given weapons, they did not give them back. The Kornilov Affair made the Bolsheviks look like the â€Å"defenders of Petrograd† so their numbers increased. As a result of The Provisional Government continuing in the war, opposition towards them grew. They also failed to suppress the opposition which led to opposition (Bolshevik) increase support. The Provisional Government also failed to meet the demands of the public so therefore making them turn to more extreme parties. The Bolsheviks were the biggest threat to the government because of their popularity, aims, guidance and methods. Overall, although The provisional Government had face many problems, it was the Bolsheviks that caused the eventual downfall of the government. It is not wholly The Provisional Governments fault for their own downfall because some of the problems they had inherited and as soon as they came into power they were already un-liked despite them playing a major part in it. The country side was already in chaos so that was not their fault and the April Thesis, Lenin’s speech, they could not be held responsible for that either. On the other hand, The Kornilov Affair, The June Offensive and the domestic issues were their fault as they did not address the issue leading to the radicalisation of the public. The Provisional Government did have a huge part to play in their own downfall because of their decision t continue in the war which enhanced/intensified the present issues.
